How to Prepare Your Home for a Storm

Storm season in Texas begins in June and doesn’t conclude until the end of the year. That’s six months of potential damage to your home, and depending on where you live in Texas, your home might be worse off than in other areas.

During a storm, your home can take on damage from wind, hail, falling trees, and flooding among several other external. However, if you are well prepared for the storm before it hits, you can hopefully avoid most of these problems. Keep reading to learn about a few of the steps you can take to protect your home in the event of a storm.

Roof

Your roof covers the main structure of your home and is the first line of defense for falling objects. It is for this reason that before a storm hits, you need to make sure that you trim all of the tree branches that are hanging close to your home. This way, in the event, that there are strong winds, a loose branch won't fall onto the roof of your home, damaging the shingles, or worse, breaking all the way through the roof.

Another step you can take to protect your roof is to clean out your gutters. This should be done regularly anyway, but it is often forgotten. Keeping your gutters clear of debris will prevent them from overflowing and causing leaks throughout the interior of your home.

Windows

Another aspect of your home that will require some additional protection is your windows. Glass is extremely brittle, so hail, tree branches, and other debris have the potential to either crack or shatter your window.

To prevent this from happening, you should either install a wooden or metal screen or shutter to the outside of your window to protect it from any flying objects. Keeping your windows protected will also prevent flooding throughout your home because water is less likely to seep in if your windows are protected.

Structure

To protect the exterior and foundation of your home, store or weigh down any loose objects surrounding your home. This means anything like outdoor furniture, playground toys, and equipment, or sheds.

In order to prevent flooding inside of your home, lay sandbags around the most vulnerable areas of the exterior. This can include anything from sliding glass doors, your garage door, and dog doors, just to name a few. Additionally, identify any objects in your home that you could raise or empty out in case any water does seep into your home. This will prevent water damage to electronic items, which could cause more significant problems for you.
