Floor Cleaning Tips - Depending on the Floor Type

Floor cleaning is one of the chores you can’t avoid. Considering the amount of foot traffic within your home and the dirt your shoes carry around, floors tend to get dirty quickly and need regular cleaning. Whether you are looking to clean the floors on your own or hire a professional, it is important to understand the best methods for cleaning depending on the type of flooring you have. We’ve compiled some of our best tips depending on the type of floor.

Tile

For this type of floor, it’s best if you sweep or mop at least once a week. Save the deep cleaning for when dirt and stains begin to build up. Make sure that before you deep clean, you sweep up all of the loose dirt and debris. This will make your cleaning more manageable, but it will also prevent the scratching of your floors.

For the cleaning process, begin by mixing a mild detergent with hot water, and you’re ready to mop! Make sure that when you’re mopping, you avoid using a sponge mop. These will merely push dirt into the grout rather than clean the dirt up.

Carpet

Carpet is one of the most challenging flooring options to keep clean, but it is also one of the most comfortable making it a popular option for homeowners everywhere. To figure out how to clean the carpet, you first need to figure out what kind of substance you spilled; this will determine how you clean it. If the substance is oily, blot the spot with a towel and then soak the towel in rubbing alcohol and continue blotting the area.

For organic substances, like berries or fruit juice, pour a capful of hydrogen peroxide on the stain and let it sit for 5 minutes then dab it with a soft cloth dipped in clean water. For the less pleasant types of organic stains, like pet urine, mix 1 cup of white vinegar with 1 cup of warm water and spray it on the soiled area, let it sit for a few minutes and then blot it dry.
