Emergency Water Damage Plan

What do you do when a pipe bursts and suddenly your living room is filling up with water? What do you do when an unexpected storm hits your home? Are you prepared? If your answer to any of these questions is “I don’t know”, then this blog is for you. We, here at W.B. Arthur, will go over how you prepare for water damage, and the steps you need to take in case you encounter a water-related emergency.

Be Prepared

While there’s no way to predict an emergency, you can still prepare yourself. In case of a house flood, you need to know where your water shutoff valves are located. You will most likely find the main water shutoff valve near the perimeter of your home, on the ground floor. Some appliances have their own shutoff valves including toilets, sinks, dishwashers, and washing machines. If you believe one of these appliances is the source of your leak, you can simply shut off the water supply to that individual appliance, rather than shutting off the water to your entire home. Lastly, prevent water damage by scheduling routine maintenance for your pipes and plumbing.

Stay Safe

Water damage not only has the potential to ruin your possessions but also has the capability to threaten you and your family’s health. You may be dealing with polluted water, mold, or other flood dangers. Be sure to follow these steps:

  • Unplug electronic devices and turn off the electricity.

  • Find appropriate apparel including waterproof boots and protective gloves.

  • When it is deemed safe, rescue your most valuable items.

Get in Touch With Your Insurance Company

Contact your insurance company as soon as possible. They will guide you through your water damage insurance claim. To expedite your insurance process, have an agent come inspect your property damage ASAP. Most homeowners' insurance agents have dealt with whatever you’re dealing with, so they can help you find the right path to take in restoring your property and home.

Begin the Drying Process

You’ll want to start drying the wet areas quickly. This will prevent mold from growing and further damaging your property. Turn your air conditioner on, as this can aid in drying the affected areas. If it’s possible, move wet furniture to dry areas and hang any rugs or bedding to dry. Mold has serious health implications, so drying your environment should be your number one priority.

In an emergency, it’s difficult to not panic; but, with an emergency plan, you will be able to act smart and fast. When you feel prepared, you are able to address an emergency with speed and agility, which can prevent damage in the long run.
